The palliative care research group investigates interventions which aim to support patients and their caregivers to live with the best quality of life and function, and achieve goals important to them at the end of life in the place of care of their choice. It has led the establishment of the NSW Palliative Care Studies collaborative (ImPACCT – Improving palliative care through clinical trials) exponentially increasing research capacity and ability to undertake multisite trials. Our research has focused on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions using a wide range of robust methodologies including randomized clinical trials, exploring outcomes that have been identified as important by patients and their families and ways interventions which show improved outcomes could be translated readily into clinical practice. In particular the group brings particular expertise in evaluating complex interventions. The palliative care research group has also systematically identified where variation in practice and hence patient outcomes may lie, to directly inform clinical practice change.
